Born in Miri, Sarawak, 1974

"I try to promote my home state not just to foreigners but also, to other Malaysians through my paintings..."

Hendrick Nicholas studied Fine Art at the MARA Institute of Technology, Shah Alam. Hendrick captures first and foremost, the warmth and colours of the diverse cultures found in his homeland Sarawak.

Hendrick grew up in the midst of longhouses in the heart of Borneo. He was surrounded by artifacts and tribal weaponry, all of which are slowly losing its value due to modern age. His early work, entitled the Longhouse Welcome Series, attracted a lot of attention, local and foreign.

In 1992, Hendrick won the 3rd prize in the Sarawak Ateliar Society Art Competition. He also won two awards in 1996. One of them was a minor award in the Young Contemporary Johore. The other was a consolation prize in Permata Merchant Bank Art Competition. He has also recently exhibited in Perth, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei. Many are hoping to see more of his works.
